A New York native, Lissa Friedman began studying art as a child at the Art Students League in New York , where she received formal instruction in the Old Masters style from David A. Leffel. That training gave her the strong classical background that she applies to her work today. She received a Bachelor of Arts in art from C.W. Post College in New York , completed post-baccalaureate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, and then earned a Doctoral Degree in Art Therapy at Florida State University in Tallahassee , Florida .

Friedman has painted in every style: cubism, surrealism, abstract expressionism, non-objective, and visionary. Within the last few years, however, Friedman has returned to her roots in realism with a fresh perspective. She brings to the north Florida landscape her considerable talent for exploring the complicated interplay of natural elements and especially for capturing the nuances of light. Her moving, sensitive pieces reflect a spiritual connection with Newnan's Lake at her home near Gainesville , Florida .

While she has shown her work throughout the country, in recent years, Friedman has presented mostly in Florida , including a one-person shows at the Thomas Center Gallery titled A Show in Blues and Greens, and at the Hippodrome State Theater titled The Ecstatic Women's Series, both in Gainesville , Florida . Most recently, in Gainesville , Florida , she had shows at the City of Gainesville Administration Building, as part of the Art in the City Program, and at the Center for Women's Studies at the University of Florida . Her work was also recently shown at the Melrose Bay Art Gallery in Melrose , Florida . Currently, she is featured at Hector's Art Gallery in Gainesville , Florida . In winter 2006, Friedman's art will appear in the publication for a national writers' convention in Key West , FL.

Friedman's paintings have appeal to diverse individuals, groups, and governments. Of the thirteen paintings sold in 2005, nine went to a University of Florida Collection and the rest to private collectors.

In addition, Friedman teaches oil painting in the style of the Old Masters at her studio on Newnans Lake , in Gainesville , Florida . Her classes include still lives, landscapes, and live models.
